Alapaha had a nice gym and a big two-story school. Basketball ended prematurely, though, after the 1952 tornado damaged both school and gym, the school suffering extensive damage. Multiple newspaper reports about the twister state that school paperwork was scattered for miles and miles. One article stated that some blew as far as Coffee County. Decisions were made to send the high schoolers to Enigma and Nashville. Thus was the end of basketball at Alapaha High, though the elementary portion retained teams.

Basketball was played in 1945-46, probably making it the first school to play after World War II. Despite arguably being the largest supplier of talent in the county and having a very strong team in the Lions' Club, the Tigers struggled a bit in these years.
