Nashville Hornets

Nashville actually went by several different nicknames in its life; Tigers and Swampers preceded Hornets. Nashville had the most overall success of any basketball program in Berrien County. The boys went to state in 1926 after being district runner-up and finished in the final four. They came within an eyelash in 1932 and 1939, both times losing in the district finals. The girls were an early powerhouse, along with Waresboro and Lanier County. They won district in 1927 and 1929. Unfortunately the GHSA did not begin girls' state tournaments until 1945 or the sextet would have had a chance to prove their mettle against the rest of the state. Nashville came close a couple of times after the GHSA began with girls' tournaments, but had the misfortune of running into Baxley and Jeff Davis. Baxley had a lengthy win streak and Jeff Davis boasted a 6'4" forward.

There are a host of Hornets that could contest for being the best of this pre-consolidated era. There is no competition for toughest. The winner is Hubert Powell. The Nashville Herald is missing for most of the 1920s, so primary sources are scarce for stories. Two letters written to the Berrien Press in 1968 spoke of Nashville making the state tournament. Both mention Powell's game against Dalton, though they vary on details. As the story goes, Nashville held a very slim 10-9 lead late in the tourney game with Dalton. Dalton had an open player. He is receiving a pass and is sure to make the basket to put them in the lead and make a victory very difficult indeed. There was a jump ball after every made shot in those days. Powell sprints. He possibly forgets that it is not fall, where he is a top-notch football player. He tackles. Hard. One letter stated that the poor kid broke his leg. The other said it was his ribs. No technical fouls exist in 1926. The Dalton player gets two free throws but nothing else. Blinded by pain, he misses both. Nashville holds on for the victory, which is and will forever be the lowest combined score in a state tournament game.

Nashville had an indoor gym, which served them well. It hosted many county tournaments, including at least one for Cook County. Apparently, the highlight of the Cookies' was the gym at Sparks-Adel. When it burned in the early 1930s, they requested usage of Nashville's for the county shindig. By the mid-1950s the gym's best days were behind it. Consolidated Berrien High barely made use of it and the youngest of the elementary school children were kept away from it. The facility was finally demolished in the early 1960s.

The Hornets suspended all athletics for World War II. No sports of any type were played after the 1942 County Tournament until 1946.
