"AS IF WE WERE GHOSTS", COMING TO GEORGIA PUBLIC BROADCASTING

Welcome to the Georgia High School Basketball Project!

This website is attempting to chronicle some historical aspects of the high school game in Georgia. The main focus is collecting scores and data about the various state tournaments held since 1922.

Also on this site's agenda are pages of school nicknames and dates each school has existed. With all the changes and shifts Georgia has gone through in the past 100 years, the big list on the GHSBP website is expected to grow considerably as new information is found.

There are also a few other interesting historical quirks and stories that are offered for readers to peruse. A detailed listing of the 1976-80 Lowndes Vikettes' winning streak is one of the highlights.

Being a proud graduate, a website about high school basketball in Berrien County is in the works as well. It will feature past scores, rosters, and other historical data.

recent updates
07/25/2011: 2011 brackets are uploaded. There are some other bits and pieces I need to fix up, which I'll try to do within a few days.

07/18/2011: 2011 teams are fixed up and uploaded. Some of the new schools don't have all their details input, but that's soon to come. I just wanted to get the information out there.

07/15/2011: Hopefully, within a week at least part of the 2011 tournament will be uploaded. I'm working on it now.

So, what's been the delay? Laziness, in part. I have other interests, too. Football research - GIA and 1940s and before - and other tangents. Other tangents have ranged from everything to the Leo Frank case to reading about the Civil Rights era to typing up old Georgia school directories* to occasionally driving off to find old school sites (as of June, I've photograph something in 80 counties) to even a fascination with the Abdication.

* If I ever get those finished, it's going to be some interesting stuff. Cumulative white school lists begin in 1937 and black schools in 1957. It's useful for seeing the pace of integration, population shifts and the death of the rural school.

Flickr collection, mainly consisting of GIA articles and old school photos.
