The Tournament
Teams: 16
How determined: Top 16 teams in power rankings, with an automatic bid for region champions.
Champion: Gordon Lee
School Title: 1st
Final Record: 25-7
Coach:
Notes: Randolph-Clay went to Macon believing that they were to be the home team in the championship game and only brought white uniforms. Gordon Lee was actually home, leaving Randolph-Clay in a fix. Fortunately, former head coach Joseph Brand lived in nearby Gray and was able to borrow the purple road uniforms of Jones County.
Other notes: Though other tournaments had started with more teams, this 2013 Class A tourneys were the first to start with fewer than 16 since 1972. Class A was split in all sports beginning in the 2012-13 school year into public and private school divisions. Power rankings were calculated weekly in each division and factored in such things as points scored, wins and losses and size of opponents.
Portal's girls made the tournament for the first time since 1950, when it was a Class C school.
