Lenwood Denton, Alma's head coach, was killed in an incident in Alma on February 2, 1956. Denton was stabbed by another man. According to the Alma Times, the attacker's family members had attempted to have him committed to an institution for the insane.
Online genealogical records seem to indicate Denton's full name was Lenwood McCrary Denton, born March 14, 1928 in Crawfordville.
