The Tournament
Teams: 16
How determined: Region winners, runners-up, third, and fourth place teams.
Champion: Dodge County
School Title: 1st
Final Record: 32-1
Coach: Bob Davis
Notes:
Other Notes:
- Billy Ensley had a difficult choice. His Hart County boys won their first round game over West Rome on March 7. They were to play at Georgia Tech on March 8. Better, his Bulldogettes won their first round on March 6. Their second round was also on March 8. Ensley, like a good many coaches of this era, commandeered both squads. Because he was already in Atlanta, Ensley opted to stay with the boys. Vice principal Pete Herndon had stayed in Fitzgerald with the girls and coached them for their second round game against Berrien. Both teams ultimately captured third place crowns.
- Fitzgerald was a bit of an odd choice for a girls state tournament. They had dropped girls basketball after the 1956-57 season and would not resume it until many years later.
