The Tournament
Teams: 32
How determined: Region 1st through 4th place winners.

Champion: Dublin
School Title: 1st
Final Record: 28-2
Coach: Clint Thomas
Notes:

Other Notes:

  • To beat #1 ranked East Hall, Thomasville had to be perfect. While they weren't quite perfect, the 'Dogs were close enough to secure the win, at least from the free throw line. Thomasville sank 31 of 34 charity shots in the game, including 15 of 17 in the final four minutes.
  • It is impossible to top Mansfield's record of zero wins heading into a state tourney. Mansfield also had an unfair advantage when it represented 5-C; it was the only team in 5-C. No district or region tournament played, no wins required to gain entry. Disregarding them, Irwin County might be the record holder for fewest wins going into a tournament. The Indians had only two victories heading into the 2-AA tournament before they caught fire and managed to make it as a #4 seed. Their run ended at state's opening round, as eventual state runner-up Thomasville gave them quite a licking.

Oddly, 2-AA might also have secured the record for the fewest wins by a girls' team who had to qualify going into a state tournament in 2006. Fitzgerald entered at 5-11. Unlike Irwin, they won their first round game over Mitchell-Baker before being clobbered by Screven County. The Mansfield girls had previously qualified like the Mansfield boys, with no region rivals. The 1950 AA girls' tournament was an open tournament and a couple of squads participating there had worse records than Fitzgerald in 2006.
