Year Minimum Foundation building program completed c. 1955? for Bartow County; ? for Cartersville Bartow County and Cartersville city are separate school systems. Bartow County seems to have built a Bartow Elementary school in c. 1955, according to a list of projects in the March 28, 1954 Rome News-Tribune. Cartersville possibly did no building projects at Summer Hill, its lone African American school, during the mid-1950s. The June 25, 1959 Rome News-Tribune listed a 16-room build for Summer Hill Elementary and seven classrooms and "additional facilities" for Summer Hill High. These were finished in 1960.

Year of total integration 1968. Summer Hill became Cartersville Junior High, despite a student protest that begged the Cartersville board to keep the Summer Hill name and keep longtime principal J.S. Morgan in that role somewhere in the school system. The Feb. 15, 1968 Rome News-Tribune said the students planned to speak at a school board meeting. Cartersville was among the first non-metro Atlanta school districts to do any integration. The Jan. 6, 1965 Rome News-Tribune said a third grade African American student transferred from Summer Hill to Cartersville Primary in January 1965. The system accepted applications from Dec. 26-31, 1964 for the current year.
