Profile: Bleckley County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
1956.

Cochran Colored moved into a new building in February 1956. Bleckley had a county school system and Cochran had a separate city system, an arrangement that lasted until the two merged in 1977. Bleckley County built nothing for its African American students in the 1950s.

Year of total integration

Known high schools
  • Cochran Colored
  • Thompson Street (Cochran)
Many Black schools changed their names in the 1960s to less racially offensive terms. "Cochran Colored" was indeed the name Cochran city schools submitted annually to the Georgia Department of Education for its schools directory. For its new name, the school chose its physical location, Thompson Street.
