Profile: Brantley County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
c. 1956-1957

Nahunta Elementary received a new building to consolidate all Black schools.

Year of total integration
c. 1967.

Nahunta Elementary is presumed to have closed in 1967, fully integrating Brantley schools. No official announcement was made in the Brantley Enterprise, but Nahunta Elementary is not listed in a September enrollment report from opening day.

Known high schools
  • Waynesville

Waynesville possibly was never a full high school. By the mid-1950s, Brantley opted to bus their high school students to Center in Waycross. Forms filled out by Brantley officials to the Department of Health, Education and Welfare indicate Black students attended Hoboken and Nahunta high schools in 1966-67. HEW began to crack down on busing across county lines a year earlier, but it is not currently known where students were for 1965-66.

Brantley County High opened in 1967, consolidating Hoboken and Nahunta.
