Year Minimum Foundation building program completed 1955-56 Six schools were built in Bulloch County during this building program, one of the larger ones in the state. For African Americans, four of these were elementary schools: New Hope (at Register), Willow Hill (Portal), Edward Johnson (Brooklet) and Mary Jackson (near Nevils). William James received a new high school that seems to have opened at the very beginning of 1956, based on an article from the Jan. 12, 1956, Bulloch Herald.

Year of total integration William James remained open as a high school after 1970.
