Profile: Burke County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
1955.

Forty-two (42!) Black public schools in Burke County were reduced to six: Cousins (at Sardis), Girard, Gough, Midville, Palmer (at Keysville) and Waynesboro High & Industrial. All six were new buildings.

Year of total integration
1970.

Known high schools
  • Blakeney (Waynesboro)
  • Boggs Academy (Keysville)
  • Waynesboro High & Industrial

Boggs Academy was a private school, with local and boarding students. It stayed open until 1984.

It is possible that one of Burke's many, many, many county schools before 1955 had a full high school at some point.
