Profile: Camden County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
c. 1956

Judging by aerial shots on Historic Aerials, Bowls Elementary, just south of White Oak, was almost assuredly built in the school building program of the 1950s, as was Camden County Training in St. Marys. Kingsland Union quite possibly was well.

Ralph Bunche's building in Woodbine was completed in 1951, according to the Nov. 30, 1951 Camden County Tribune.

Year of total integration
1970.

Known high schools
  • Camden County Training (St. Marys)
  • Ralph Bunche (Woodbine)

Ralph Bunche opened in 1951, replacing the high school department of Camden County Training, which had previously been the lone high school for Black students in the county. Black residents had been requesting a high school at Woodbine since 1946, with Camden finally announcing plans to build one in late 1950.

Camden County Training was semi-private, with day students and boarding students. Boarders were charged $15 every four weeks, noted in an Aug. 7, 1947 story in the Southeast Georgian, Kingsland's newspaper. The cost covered "board, fuel, lights and medical expense."
