Profile: Chattooga County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
1957 for Chattooga County; ? for Trion city.

Summerville Negro - later known as A.C. Carter - received a 12-room addition and lunchroom in Chattooga's building program. Chattooga County Training was set for two classrooms. Chattooga was allowed to begin construction even without a solution to its ongoing resistance to consolidate white high schools. Subligna, Menlo, Lyerly and Summerville all had high schools.

Year of total integration
1966 for Chattooga County and Trion city.

Chattooga was among the earliest Georgia counties to completely integrate its schools. It, Calhoun city and Catoosa County were among the first three to have full grades 1-12 schools within their systems to integrate.

A.C. Carter became North Summerville Elementary for the 1966-67 school year, according to the Aug. 25, 1966 Summerville News. In that issue of the newspaper, Superintendent James Spencer said he hoped integration would "proceed on an orderly basis."
