Profile: Cobb County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
c. 1954 (Cobb County); ? (Marietta city).

Then, as now, Cobb County and Marietta city were separate school systems. The Cobb building program provided new schools for Acworth, Austell and Smyrna, later renamed Roberts in Acworth, Washington Street in Austell and Rose Garden Hills in Smyrna.

When or what improvements Lemon Street in Marietta recceived are unknown.

Year of total integration
1969 for county and city.

Lemon Street's high school was completely integrated in 1967 as was city school Wright Street Elementary, but it was two years later than its elementary was turned into East Side Elementary and desegregated.

Wright Street Elementary was built in 1961 and only lsted until 1967 as an all-Black school. Upon total integration, it became Marietta Junior High.

Cobb County had three African American schools in the mid-1960s, all elementary grades. The June 27, 1968 Marietta Daily Journal announced the closings of Rose Garden Hills and Roberts for that fall, but Washington Street was kept open through the 1968-69 school year. Cobb superintendent Dr. Alton Crew announced its upcoming closure in the March 13, 1969 Daily Journal, saying that at 86 students, it was too expensive to remain open.
