Profile: Colquitt County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
c. 1956 for Moultrie city and 1956 for Colquitt County.

Moultrie city and Colquitt County were separate school systems at this time, though they always kept close ties. The two combined for the 1969-70 school year after a vote by the public in March of that year and the Colquitt school board in June.

Moultrie's building program added a shop building and remodeled Moultrie High School for Negro Youth, later renamed William Bryant.

The Aug. 28, 1956, Moultrie Observer said the opening of school was delayed two weeks for 1956-57 to allow construction to finish Charlie A. Gray elementary school. They had to wait, the Observer said, because at least some of the old buildings had already been torn down.

Year of total integration
1970.

Charlie A. Gray kept its name and continued as an elementary school. William Bryant became a building for Moultrie Junior High and David E. Hooker, the name adopted by the Doerun school, ceased being used.

Additional notes
David E. Hooker was named for its principal in 1966. The reason behind the change? The June 10, 1966, Moultrie Observer answers:

"The board also approved naming the Negro elementary school at Doerun for veteran educator David E. Hooker. Since both elementary schools in Doerun have been known as Doerun Elementary Shcool, the board felt that naming the school would avoid confusion."
