Profile: Columbia County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
c. 1957.

Columbia's building program gave them a consolidated high school in Blanchard, full name John P. Blanchard, named after the county schools superintendent. Blanchard contained all grades. Phinizy Elementary, Gibbs Elementary and George White Elementary were built as well, giving Columbia all new Black schools.

It may be surprising to know that Blanchard was not the only African American school named for a white superintendent. Floyd T. Corry in Greene County was given the name months after Corry died. Jenkins County named its new school in Millen Burgess Landrum. Like Blanchard, Landrum was the current superintendent.

George White was named for an actual Black man, Rev. White, who was a teacher and minister.

Year of total integration
1970.
