Profile: Dade County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
1956.

A new school building for Hooker Elementary, which already was the lone African American school in Dade County. Everything in Hooker was to be new, said the May 3, 1956 Dade County Times. Hooker had burned in 1954, and with the fire not discovered until the next morning, all the equipment burned with it.

Even without a fire destroying everything, Hooker would have gotten a new school. In reporting the fire, the Nov. 25, 1954, Dade County Times mentioned the school was not wired for electricity. The May 28, 1953, paper described the building as "one-room creosoted." Two teachers and 46 students (in 1953) were crammed into the one room.

Year of total integration
1966.

Hooker School was fully consolidated and integrated with North Dade Elementary, per the April 28, 1966 Dade County Times announcing the system's plan. Hooker had 27 students and two teachers, with one moving to North Dade and the other to Dade High.

The 1966 article indicates that Hooker's high school students began attending Dade High in 1965-66. Previously, they had been bused to Howard High in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Known high schools
None.
Dade's Black high school students were bused. With the mountains in between Dade and Walker County, the shorter route was sending the students out of state, to Howard High School in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
