Profile: DeKalb County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
c. 1954-55 (DeKalb County); c. 1955 (Decatur city)

Postwar DeKalb County was a nonstop whir of activity as far as schools were concerned for 20+ years. In April 1950, the DeKalb New Era listed 13 schools different building projects going on at that time and this was before state government money arrived. Of course this was the Jim Crow era. DeKalb's African American schools were built by the State School Building Authority and with Minimum Foundation money.

Hamilton High (Avondale Estates), the all-grades Bruce Street (Lithonia) and Lynwood Park came under this plan, as did Robert Shaw Elementary (Avondale Estates) County Line Elementary and Victoria Simmons Elementary (Stone Mountain). All of DeKalb's Black students received new schools.

Trinity High in Decatur city was built with state money. It was nearly finished in October 1955.

Year of total integration
1969 for DeKalb County.

All Black schools in DeKalb were closed in 1969.

Decatur city closed Trinity High in 1967. Beacon Elementary, which was located at the same site, took over Trinity's building. Beacon was still an all-Black elementary in 1968-69, but because of a new housing development, the city expected it to have white students in 1969-70. No confirmation on if it did or did not.
