Profile: Early County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
c. 1954

Three African American schools were built, Washington (Blakely), Carver (Jakin) and Kestler (Damascus).

Carver seems to have been abandoned in 1968. No official announcement was made in the Early County News, but no teachers were listed for Carver going into the 1968-69 school year Carver's short lifespan after getting a new school was likely for two reasons: enrollment and location.

At the start of the 1967-68 school year, Carver had an enrollment of 134, according to the Sept. 7, 1967 Early County News. The Georgia Educational Directory lists Carver at seven grades. In addition to being small, Carver was isolated. Though listed as a Jakin address, Carver was several miles northwest of the town, on former Georgia Highway 363.

Year of total integration
1970.

Known high schools
  • Carver (Jakin)
  • Kestler (Damascus)
  • Washington (Blakely)

Early's Board of Education decided to close Kestler's high school in 1960 because of low attendance. It was part of a much larger survey (printed in the Jan. 14, 1960 Early County News) about the county holding on to its rural elementary and high schools as attendance plummeted. White high schools at Damascus and Jakin remained open.
