Profile: Fayette County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
1955.

Fayette County Training consolidated all Black schools in the county.

Year of total integration
1970.

Fayette County Training's 9th grade was moved to Fayette County High in 1968-69. The system initially was in hot water with the Department of Health, Education and Welfare for not doing more for integration in their eyes and asked for the county to be desegregated that year, said the April 10, 1968 Fayette County News. The system reworked its plan slightly and it was accepted.

Fayette was growing very quickly in this era. The system had to reopen Tyrone Elementary, which had previously been closed, to handle some of the overcrowding. Then, said the Aug. 6, 1969 News, there were too many students for what they wanted to put at Tyrone, and it was scaled back to only one grade.

Schools at Fayette were full enough that the planned move of Fayette County Training's 7th and 8th grade had to be held at that building until total desegregation a year later.
