Profile: Floyd County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
?

Floyd County and Rome city were two separate school systems.

The Sept. 18, 1952, Rome News-Tribune said the Floyd County school system was building a high school building for Main, located in Rome city. The high school was operated by both county and city.

No other Black school projects were listed for the county in that 1952 article, but much more recent Rome News-Tribune stories on the history of an earlier school, Fairview-Brown, list that E.S. Brown Elementary received a new building in 1954. That is backed up by maps from Historic Aerials, which show the location of E.S. Brown on a 1968 topographic map and clear views of its building on aerials from 1955 and 1964.

Year of total integration
1968 for Floyd County; ? for Rome city

Floyd County was set to close E.S. Brown Elementary in 1968, according to the Feb. 8, 1968 Rome News-Tribune, with students split between Cave Spring and Coosa. It was the only Black school in the county system, as high school students were sent to Main, which was part of the Rome city system. Sixty-seven students were enrolled at E.S. Brown in 1967-68.
