GORDON COUNTY
Stephens
Location: 700 West Line Street - Calhoun
Dates:
Named for:
Post-GIA: spent some years as Line Street School
Historical Average Daily Attendance:
Notes: Though it probably never exceded 100 students, Stephens was a very important school. Stephens had a gym, which enabled them to host several Class C state tournaments. Most of these tournaments saw both the Stephens boys and girls go deep. The girls, starring Maud Chattam, won it all in 1959 and 1960. The boys took full honors in 1952, 1954, 1959, 1960, and 1961. Impressively, they also managed a few seasons of football in the late 1940s before the lack of manpower and funds caught up with them.
