Profile: Gordon County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
1956.

Gordon County and Calhoun city are separate school systems, but had an agreement for the African American students of both. The Nov. 22, 1956 Calhoun Times announced the completion of an an elementary school addition which contained science and home ec laboratories, and cafeteria for Stephens School, an all-grades campus in Calhoun.

Stephens already was housing all Black students in both the county and city systems after a consolidation during the 1951-52 school year. Gordon County's schedule for students usually started in July at this time, using a modified schedule that let at out the schools for weeks during harvesting. While school was out in October 1951, an announcement was made in the Gordon County News on Oct. 4 that A) school was back in session Oct. 29 and B) Black students "will be transported by bus to Stevens (sic) High School in Calhoun."

An enrollment list from Gordon's county schools in September 1951 had fewer than 100 students.
