Profile: Grady County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
c. 1955 and 1956.

For some reason, there were two sessions for Grady County's building program, even though there were no individual city systems. Whigham received a new Black elementary school, probably finished in 1955. The other building program was likely completed in 1956, a new Washington High in Cairo and Beckbranch Elementary near Calvary.

Washington High had burned in 1954. The Sept. 3, 1954 Cairo Messenger that the main building was essentially destroyed, with only its front wall and chimneys still standing. Spared were the home economics building and a pair of six-room buildings, one frame and the other the Messenger described as temporary. One of these would likely be surplus military barracks, which were oft used in the 1950s for overcrowded white and Black schools.

Year of total integration
