Profile: Greene County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
1956.

Three Black schools included, a high school building for Floyd T. Corry, Hubert-English in Siloam and Darden-Thomas in Union Point.

Year of total integration
1970.

Floyd T. Corry is completely integrated in 1970 with Greene County's traditionally white schools.

As part of the total integration plan, Floyd T. Corry retains its name - a relative rarity among Black schools - but is relegated to grades 4-7 only. Darden-Thomas, which was an elementary in Union Point, was to house grades 4-7 for students in Union Point's zone. No renaming was announced in the March 6, 1970 Herald-Journal.

Hubert-English, an elementary school in Siloam, was to be abandoned completely with its students moved to Greensboro Elementary and Floyd T. Corry Junior High. Greene County had ceased using the white school building in Siloam, which gained new life as part of Nathanael Greene, a private school.

Floyd T. Corry was named at the start of the 1956-57 school year for Greene's former superintendent, who had died unexpectedly earlier in 1956.

Greene County was named in 1950 after the building of a hastily-constructed building to appease African-Americans in the county who were upset over conditions.
