Profile: Gwinnett County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
1957 and 1958.

Buford city is a separate school system from Gwinnett County. Lawrenceville was its own separate school system from Gwinnett until 1948. There had been some delays in building as Gwinnett had to soothe the many towns in the county, plus Buford had been considering joining the county school system. Ultimately, of course, Buford did not.

With Buford staying separate, it had its own building project, which saw Buford Colored (later known as Greenard-Watson) built. Buford was asking for bids to build in early 1955, so it's possible it was finished in 1956, before the rest of Gwinnett.

Hooper-Renwick had received a new building in 1951. THe Sept. 6, 1951 News-Herald said the brick school had 12 classrooms, a library and office space. Even with this, Gwinnett was approved for a $130,000 addition to the school. This was in the first round of building projects for the county, finished in 1957. The 1958 project was for North Gwinnett.

Year of total integration
1969 for Gwinnett County; 1970 for Buford city.

Hooper-Renwick graduated its final class in 1968, with the rest of its grades completely desegregating in 1969.

Atlanta Journal and Atlanta Constitution articles of Aug. 21, 1969 and Aug. 25, 1969, respectively, said that grades 8-12 at Buford's Greenard-Watson were being sent to Buford High for that school year. The Georgia Educational Directory of that year has Greenard-Watson at grades 1-12, so confirmation of the high school status is needed. Regardless, Greenard-Watson finished combining with white Buford students in 1970.
