Profile: Jeff Davis County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
1956.

Hazlehurst High & Elementary received a new building. A July 26, 1956, Jeff Davis County Ledger article about the new schools being finished noted Hazlehurst's previous African American school was torn down to build this one.

Building of this school began in January 1955, with the Ledger of Jan. 27 saying that "a portion of the old building will be moved at once." To compensate for the loss of classroom space, the lunchroom at Hazlehurst High was being used to classes and meals. After being moved "to a somewhat different location on the present grounds." Hazlehurst's Black students spent an entire school year and a half in these conditions.

Year of total integration
1970.

Federal aid was stopped to Jeff Davis County Schools in December 1968 for a lack of progress in desegregation. The Dec. 19, 1968, Jeff Davis County Ledger did not mind giving the details on why the Department of Health, Education and Welfare did this: "HEW made an offer to the Board of Education last summer to continue funds if at least twelve (12) teachers were assigned across racial lines," said the Ledger. "The Superintendent would not agree to do this."

Then-Superintendent W.G. Beall was quoted in that same edition of the Ledger. "Freedom of Choice is as far as we're going in this county and if the government won't take that, then we'll get along without the federal funds," he said.

Jeff Davis, Bulloch and Candler counties were all getting their federal school funding cut off on the same date, Dec. 19, 1968.
