Profile: Jenkins County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
1956.

Burgess Landrum, nee Jenkins County Training, and a Black school, Herndon-Birdsville, were built under Jenkins' building program. The latter school barely lasted a decade before closing.

Burgess Landrum was one of a handful of African American schools named after white superintendents. Floyd T. Corry (Greensboro) and Blanchard (Appling) also held that honor. Landrum and Blanchard were both living and currently superintendents at the times their buildings were named.

That's not judging the why. In Millen, there was probably plenty of happiness in the new building, which was given its name right after the building was ready in April 1956. Its predecessor, Jenkins County Training, burned in March 1955. The March 10, 1955 Millen News said students were to be housed in a lodge and in churches while the new building was under construction.

Year of total integration
1970.
