Profile: Liberty County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
c. 1956-57.

Very little is known about Liberty County's building program. Three schools were left in the school system following the building projects. Based on overhead views from Historic Aerials, it seems likely that Liberty County High (near McIntosh) and Riceboro Elementary were built under the program. Hineshaw Elementary in Hinesville was the other school.

Year of total integration
1972.

There was not enough room at Bradwell Institute to completely combine the populations of it and Liberty County High. The two remained apart until a new school was finished in 1972.

Bradwell Institute was retained as the name, but not without a battle. The name was considered controversial because of its origin. The school was opened by Samuel Dowse Bradwell and named for his father, James Sharpe Bradwell. With the naming coming in 1871 there was a solid connection to not just the antebellum South, as well as the Confederate Army.

The name of the school was put up to a public vote, either Bradwell Institute or Hinesville High School. The April 6, 1972 Liberty County Herald reported a close race, 1,860 for retaining Bradwell and 1,775 for Hinesville.

Known high schools
  • Dorchester Academy (McIntosh)
  • Liberty County (McIntosh)
Dorchester was one of the leading African American private schools of the first half of the 20th century. Most of its campus is still standing.

This Liberty County High is not to be confused with the current. This Liberty was located out of McIntosh and closed as a high school in 1972.
