Profile: Lowndes County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
1956 Valdosta city; c. 1956 Lowndes County.

Then, as now, Lowndes County and Valdosta city are two different school systems.

Valdosta city's state funds built Pinevale High School, allowing the city to use Dasher as a junior high. Magnolia Elementary received an addition.

Lowndes County built two elementary schools from scratch in the mid-1950s: P.G. Williams (Clyattville), Wetherington-Robinson (Delmar) and added classrooms to Webb-Miller in Hahira. The schools were all given their names at the beginning of the 1956-57 school year, said the Aug. 10, 1956 Valdosta Daily Times.

The county, however, had a major problem: A lack of a high school. Lowndes County Training, colloquially (if not officially) known as Mount Zion had been the biggest of the county high schools. The issue was, however, that Mount Zion was not in good shape.

The money for the county schools was one phase of the operation. The rural white schools had not wanted to lose their high schools, holding up construction for years. The April 2, 1959 Valdosta Daily Times said in that trying to get a local bond issue passed ($800,000), the Lowndes school board promised to build a high school for each race.

Mount Zion was not going to cut it.

A contingent of Black citizens were ready to force a decision. Lowndes' superintendent, citing population trends, did not feel building a county high school was feasible.

Several ideas were floated. One was to try to reach a deal to bus county high school students to the new Pinevale High in Valdosta city. Another board member considered two county high schools after additions were built at the new P.G. Williams and at Webb-Miller, in that case an addition to the addition.

In the end, a temporary solution saw all high school children in the county moved to Webb-Miller. Westside High School, near Valdosta, was opened in 1960.
