Profile: Madison County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
1955-1956.

Madison County built two schools for Black students, Northside and Southside. Northside, near Ila, was an elementary school. Southside, at Colbert, handled all grades and was the sole high school at the time of integration.

Year of total integration
1970.

In April 1970, the Madison County school system announced that Southside would be renamed South Madison for the 1970-71 school year and be in use as a middle school, grades 6-8.

Madison's other Black school, Northside, was a small elementary in Ila. It had last been listed as a school in the Georgia Educational Directory in 1966-67. Research has not been done on Northside's initial fate, though it seems likely that nearly all of the students would have been moved to Southside in 1967, with very few (if any) immediately being moved to Madison's majority white schools. No word was mentioned in 1970 what was being done with Northside's building.
