Profile: Marion County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
1954.

Marion County was one of the first in Georgia to finish its building program. A new all-grades school for African-Americans was built at Buena Vista, which consolidated all schools in the county.

Year of total integration
1970.

Buena Vista High and Elementary completely integrates in 1970. The total integration sees changes made at Marion County High, a change in school colors (to blue and gold) and a nickname change from Red Foxes to Eagles.

Marion County had been advised in January 1970 that it would have to totally integrate or lose federal funds, according to the Jan. 8, 1970 Marion County Patriot and Ellaville Citizen. In March, it submitted its plan. Marion preferred, of course, to keep Freedom of Choice in place. Option No. 2 was total integration, a plan that was basically accepted by the federal government.

The Sept. 3 edition of the Patriot and Citizen reported that the schools had been working together since the spring of 1970, each electing members to what would be a unified student council as well as other organizations. Faculties and student bodies had been integrated at Marion County Elementary and High for "several years" (March 5, 1970 Patriot and Citizen).

The Buena Vista school became Marion County Elementary, grades 1-5.
