Profile: McIntosh County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
1958.

Todd-Grant's new building opened in February 1958. In covering the ceremonies for its opening (and the opening of Darien High), the Feb. 13, 1958 Darien News contained this passage:

Chester A. DeVillars, principal at Todd-Grant, stood a moment in thought, looking across at the old buildings he had occupied so long.

"This is the happiest day of my life," he said quietly.

Some consolidation took place immediately at Todd-Grant, including that of Carneghan school, which the March 13 Darien News described as being 25'x50', with a partition to make two rooms. Two wood-burning stoves provided the heat. There was not any plumbing. It sounds primitive, but really was even moreso for its era. The News said it was built in 1946, long after schools should have been modernized. The McIntosh board had provided the building materials, but area residents did the construction.

Eulonia also got a new school in 1958. Its building was close, but not quite ready at the time Todd-Grant and Darien were finished.

Year of total integration
1970.
