Profile: Meriwether County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
c. 1955.

New schools were not ready at the start of the 1955-56 school year. The Aug. 26, 1955, Meriwether Vindicator had a message from Superintendent E.C. Mitcham Jr. for all African American students to go back to their old schools for the time being. "[A]s soon as we are completely organized in the new building[s] we will have a day set aside for open house where everyone interested may visit and see the new plants."

McCrary (Gay), Greenville Consolidated, Woodbury Elementary and High, Luthersville, Meriwether County Training (Manchester) and Warm Springs were all to receive new schools. Of all the schools to remain open after the building project, only Durand did not get a new school. Durand would be closed within a decade.

Year of total integration
1970.

Woodbury Elementary and High remained open after 1970, with Meriwether children being zoned.
