Profile: Miller County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
1955.

Miller County consolidated all of its Black schools with a new building for Bethel in Colquitt.

Year of total integration
1970.

Bethel closes in 1970. Miller County had long had its federal school funds cut off for non-compliance with integration.

As of December 1968, Miller had absolutely zero integration, according to the Miller County Liberal of Dec. 12. The system was to lose its federal funding on Dec. 19.

Despite previously resisting so heavily, Miller did comply with the order of total integration in 1970. The way they did so was to use all of its school campuses, including Bethel, but to give them very generic names: Miller County School I, Miller County School II and Miller County School III. The system reported no incidents for the 1970-71 opening (Sept. 10, 1970 Miller County Liberal).

These were indeed the official names of the schools, with the Miller County Liberal reporting the names were changed to these on June 8 at a meeting of the board of education (reported July 9).

School II was the former Bethel campus. School III was Miller County High, which only seemed to be School III on paper and continued using the name Miller County High.
