Profile: Mitchell County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
c. 1954 for Mitchell County, c. 1954 for Pelham.

Mitchell County and Pelham city are separate school systems. Mitchell was nearly done at the start of 1954-55, though students had to begin the year at their old schools. The Aug. 27, 1954, Camilla Enterprise said Baconton was completed, but needed final approval. Everything else - a combination high school-elementary school for Camilla Consolidated, an elementary school at Cotton, an elementary for Oak Grove and additions to Rockdale in Camilla and Sale City - were to be ready by the end of 1954.

In perhaps late-breaking news, the Aug. 27, 1954, Albany Herald said Baconton, then or later given the name Dent-Reynolds, was indeed ready to use. It was a welcomed building, as the previous school for Black children in Baconton had burned three years earlier. In between, old Army barracks had been brought in to house students, but they did not feature a lunchroom or toilets.

Pelham's bids for new schools were made at the end of 1952, according to the Dec. 19, 1952, Thomasville Times-Enterprise. Mitchell County Training was built with these funds. As it typically took around a year for schools to be built, Mitchell County Training was probably ready by mid-1954.

Year of total integration
1970 for Pelham city and Mitchell County.

Pelham fully integrated its younger grades by putting them in single-gender schools.

Mitchell's integration was not the smoothest. In February 1971, the Macon Telegraph reported that around 700 students were boycotting classes. The Feb. 26 edition of that newspaper said that Black students were demanding more African American coaches and substitute teachers. They also wanted an integrated prom. Superintendent C.A. Collins said the integrated prom was not happening, adding it was "not the right time or place." Collins' remarks seem to indicate he feared violence. "[W]e are trying to do everything in the world we can to avoid anything that might occur."
