Profile: Morgan County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
1958.

Morgan County African American schools built under the Minimum Foundation Program were elementary schools at Springfield and Bostwick and an elementary school at Pearl (Street).

This was an amended program. Rutledge was supposed to have an elementary school built, but noticing a drop in Black population in the county, Morgan County officials asked for a resurvey of students. On Oct. 4, 1956, The Madisonian said after the resurvey, the State School Building Authority gave the system an option between a second elementary school at Madison or for the Bostwick building, which would also serve Rutledge. They went with Bostwick.

The new Springfield Elementary was dedicated on Feb. 23, 1958, the Feb. 20 Madisonian detailing that three other rural Black elementary schools would immediately consolidate with the existing Springfield students.

Year of total integration
1970.

Pearl became Morgan County Elementary and Junior High.

All county elementary schools, white and Black, were brought into Madison in 1968. The May 23, 1968 Madisonian indicated from Superintendent Doyle Huff was that larger schools were more economical. Of the five rural elementaries, only the African American Bostwick had as many teachers as grades.
