Profile: Pickens County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
1957.

Pickens County Training received a new school at Tate. Pickens housed students from three counties: Pickens, Gilmer and high school students from Fannin. Based on an article in the Aug. 27, 1953 Pickens County Progress, Gilmer students began being bused in that year and its lone Black school closed.

Year of total integration
c. 1966.

The last year Tri-City appears in the Georgia Educational Directory was 1965-66. By that point, it might have only been Pickens students. Fannin's African American students were completely integrated into their local school system, including the high schoolers who had been bused to Pickens. Gilmer's complete integration was likely the same year as the federal government cracked down on busing across county lines that continued segregation.
