Profile: Pierce County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
c. 1957-58.

Pierce County had already nearly completely consolidated its African American schools when it got around to getting state money for new buildings. Each of its schools were improved, an addition at Lee Street at Blackshear and a new plant for Pierce County Training at Patterson.

Lee Street was in better shape than many of the state's African American schools. Pierce County had funded it a gymnasium in 1951. The Aug. 16, 1951 Blackshear Times said 12 classrooms were added that year as well.

Year of total integration
1969.

Pierce was told it would lose federal funds if schools were not completely desegregated for 1969-70. Details were carried in the April 10, 1969 Alma Times. (Bacon County would also completely desegregate in 1969.)

The Alma Times said losing the federal funds meant nearly $200,000 taken from Pierce schools, worth 13 teachers and lunchroom funding. Pierce already had turned down state funds, said the Alma Times, for not voting to consolidate the high schools at Blackshear and Patterson. That finally happened in 1981.

"The concern of the board was apparently whether white school patrons would accept use of the previously all-Negro Lee Street and Pierce Training School, as integrated units in the county school system," said the Alma Times. Patterson's Pierce County Training was not used in 1969-70, according to the Georgia Educational Directory. Lee Street's status is currently unknown.
