Profile: Stewart County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
1957.

Combination high school and elementary buildings were completed in Richland and Lumpkin, with an elementary building for Omaha.

Year of total integration
1971.

For reasons unknown, Lumpkin was allowed to remain open through the 1970-71 school year. Like in Macon and Hancock counties, an exception might have been granted here as Stewart was a majority-minority school system.

Known high schools
  • Lumpkin
  • Lumpkin High & Industrial
  • Richland High & Industrial

Richland's high school grades transferred to Lumpkin in 1964, part of an overhaul that more severely affected white schools. Stewart County fought the state government over removal of a white high school at Richland and a one-room elementary at Omaha, but failed. Omaha's Black elementary remained - it was larger than the white one - but for both races, Richland's school buildings were transformed into junior high schools.

The "Training" and "Industrial" parts of Stewart County school names seem to have been dropped around 1968. Both terms typically carried racial connotations in Georgia.
