Profile: Sumter County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
c. 1957 for Americus city and Sumter County.

Americus city and Sumter County were separate school districts. Both seem to finish their school building programs around 1957. Though separate, the new high school built, Sumter, was a joint city-county school.

Little else is currently known about both systems' building programs.

Year of total integration
1970.

Known high schools
  • Staley (Americus)
  • Sumter (Americus)

In a confusing series of events, Staley existed first as a high school. When the new building for the city-county high school was finished in the 1950s, it became known as Sumter County. A few years later, a new county high school was built. Upon its completion, the city high school reverted to Staley and the new county high school became Sumter County.

Based the Georgia Educational Directory, several county schools went up to 10 grades in the mid-1950s. It is currently unknown if any were ever considered full high schools.
