Profile: Worth County

Year Minimum Foundation building program completed
1957.

Worth uses its state funds to build a new all-grades school at Sylvester (Holley), with elementary schools spread all over the county: Hillcrest in Anderson City, Parker at Sumner, Osie Whearry in the western community of Red Rock and New Hope on a dirt road south of Warwick.

Year of total integration
1970.

Worth kept all of its buildings, splitting the county into sections. Towns with multiple elementary schools split grades.

In the southwest corner, Minton (grades 1-3) and Hillcrest (4-8) were together; Sumner had Parker (1-4) and Sumner (5-9); the Warwick area had Warwick (1-4) and New Hope (5-8). All alone in the northwest corner, Osie Whearry housed grades 1-8. The latter had a deficit of teachers to begin the 1970-71, according to the Sept. 3, 1970 Sylvester Local. Valdosta State education degree seniors were filling the void.

In Sylvester, there was Sylvester Elementary for grades 1-4. J.W. Holley, a rare Black school allowed to keep its name, was for grades 5-9. Worth County High was 10-12.
