Notes:

5-AAAA/9-AAAA Playoffs

  • For two tournaments - 1987 and 1988 - the GHSA had nine AAAA regions. Every other class had eight. To whittle the number down to 16 squads, they instituted a playoff between two of the regions. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution stops short of calling these state playoffs, instead referring to these AAAA squads as "earning state berths." Indeed the 5-AAAA/9-AAAA games operated very much like a region tournament, with the region winner and runner-up facing those of the other region. The winners of the game got the state bids.

Others say that these were indeed state tournament games. They mention that every other region champion and runner-up got an automatic state bid and that these should be considered no different.
