The Tournament
Teams: 36
How determined: Region 1st through 4th place winners.

Champion: Wilkinson County
School Title:
Final Record: 31-0
Coach: Aaron Geter
Notes:

Other notes: The preliminary round was necessary as Class A had expanded such that the GHSA was operating nine regions. In 1987 and 1988, the GHSA did a similar preliminary round with Class AAAA, which also had nine regions.

For the first known time in state tournament history, one team walked out on the other. In the olden days of Class D, there were two occasions where a team just did not show up for their game, but this was the first time a game was ended when one team refused to play.

As described by the Savannah Morning News,

"With exactly one minute to play in the game and Calvary holding a comfortable 80-65 lead, a near brawl between the two teams resulted in Calhoun County coach Marcus Shaw being ejected after receiving his second technical foul, and his team walking out of the gym behind him. The 89-65 win for the Cavaliers ended with Calvary's Alex Reid making eight consecutive technical free throws with no other players on court.

"The trouble began when Mark Jones and Calhoun County's Raishun Anderson nearly came to blows after a Anderson was whistled for fouling Jones. Jones, Anderson and Calhoun County's DeAngelo Brown scuffled briefly before being separated by Calvary senior Dominique Henfield, but during the fracas, members of the Calhoun County team left the bench, and some Calhoun County fans leapt out of the stands to reach the court.

"After almost 15 minutes of discussion, Calhoun County was assessed multiple technical fouls, and Shaw stormed angrily across the court after being informed he was ejected. Just before Shaw reached the exit, two Calhoun County players began walking across the court waving their warm up shirts over their heads, and the rest of the team followed as Calvary's coaches and players watched from the sideline."
